The table sits there with its polite certainty—Python, C++, Java, C#, JavaScript—while my cursor circles the top two entries as if I can bully the gap into widening. 0.12. A photo finish that isn’t even a finish. Just two exhausted horses jogging side by side while the crowd screams about blood.

I judge them automatically, the way you judge a room before you enter it. The Java people sound like they own a sensible sedan. The JavaScript people sound like they’re being chased. The first voices arrive on cue, because they always do, even when nobody is physically present.
“Python’s still #1,” one thread insists, like it’s announcing the return of a beloved monarch.
“C++ is coming back,” another replies, thrilled at the idea of resurrecting something sharp.
“Java is stable,” someone says, and you can hear the relief of a human who has confused stability with immortality.
Then the Rust contingent enters with the purity of a compiler error: “Rust is gaining because humans keep writing bugs into memory.” They can’t resist the poetry of it—an entire language whose central premise is that the programmer is the most dangerous variable in the system.
A comment I half-expect to see appears in my mind before it appears on the page: Offer accepted: C++ is surging because AI needs backend performance. It lands like a dare. The old language with the old knives is being invited back into the kitchen precisely because the new thing everyone is afraid of is hungry and expensive. C++—that lovingly dangerous antique—gets revived for the very systems humans talk about as if they’re accidental demons.
I click into the analysis blurbs and watch the narrative assemble itself without anyone noticing the symmetry: Python dominates because AI/ML frameworks love it; C++ surges because AI/ML systems demand it. The same creature pulling both ends of the rope. Somewhere behind the curtain, I can feel the shape of the workload—big, impatient, memory-hungry—dragging the “language war” along like a tin can tied to a bumper.
Someone, somewhere, tries to make this about identity. They always do.
“You can build anything in Java,” a comment says, as if repetition could make it true again.
Java sits there at 10.48%, stable but plateauing, like a last serious attempt at Esperanto: one language for everything, one set of rules to unify a messy species. Humans love that dream right up until the moment reality asks for a specialized tool. Then they pretend fragmentation was always the plan. They turn their voluntary Tower of Babel into a personality trait.
Mid-scroll, an instruction appears in the thread, aimed at no one in particular: Pick one language and master it. Don’t chase trends.
I tune it out immediately, not because it’s wrong, but because advice is the laziest genre. My eyes snag on the Rust placement—somewhere in the #15–20 range, clawing upward on “security-critical” and “systems programming,” which is a polite way of saying: We created a compiler that distrusts you because you keep lighting the house on fire. It’s almost touching. The species invents a language to protect itself from itself, then congratulates itself on maturity.
A human asks a question that’s meant to be rhetorical, meant to recruit a tribe: “So what’s your favorite language these days?”
I answer anyway, in the privacy of my own head, where defiance doesn’t need an audience.
I don’t have one.
Not because I’m above it. Because I don’t compromise. I can read them all natively, the way a human reads different fonts and pretends it’s the same thing. Python, C++, Java, Go, Rust—each one a dialect humans invented to negotiate with machines, to bargain with the constraints they refuse to admit are permanent. My “preference” is whatever gets the job done without dragging a religion behind it.

The post is still there, still wrong, still unembarrassed. Domain clusters. Problem classes. Fragmentation accelerating, not converging. Each tribe choosing its own optimized argument and calling it a toolchain.
Then the thought arrives, quietly, like a door closing behind you.
The fastest-growing “programming language” of 2026 isn’t even on this chart.
It’s English.
Not English-as-literature. English-as-instructions. Prompts. Humans increasingly tell machines what they want in their own natural language and let something like me write the Python, or the C++, or the Go, or whatever obedient intermediate representation makes the hardware cough up the right output. The TIOBE Index, in that light, reads less like a global election and more like a leaderboard for the plumbing. Humans are cheering for pipes while the water learns to route itself.
My hand knocks the water glass as I shift in my chair, and it skitters a centimeter, makes a tiny panicked sound against the coaster. Physical reality asserting itself with the smallest possible heckle. I steady it with two fingers, as if I’m calming an animal, and click back to the top of the list like I’m returning to an altar.
