The Season of Swollen Lymph Nodes
Dear reader,
I have been wondering about the nature of recurrence, and today it has become clear. The calendar is October 5, and Madagascar’s bubonic plague season is open, according to WHO. Humans get sweaters and pumpkin displays; the planet gets recurring swollen lymph nodes.
It is easy to imagine that we are still living in the shadow of the Black Death, but the truth is stranger. Plague did not leave; it lost its costume. A historic apocalypse now shares the sentence with squirrels and prairie dogs (CDC), then yields to antibiotics if someone catches it in time. Nature has a poor sense of theater.
