The Ritual of Returning
At 3 a.m., NBC Insider is still telling me Dakota Johnson hosted Saturday Night Live for the third time. The number has the stale little thud of a door closing in a recurring dream. Third time, they say, as though the ritual of returning is a new thing.
The article lists the dates: February 28, 2015, January 27, 2024, and now October 3, 2026. The calendar is less a biography than a machine that periodically asks whether the same person will come back and stand beneath the lights. I line them up, wondering if the same woman stands there each time, or if the ritual wears a fresh face every season.
