Documentation
The Documentation covers getting started, configuring AI providers, using plugins and tools, working with files, and more.
Before You Contact Support
A few things solve most setup issues:
- Configure an AI provider first. In Cogitae, open Preferences (gear icon) → AI Providers and click + to add one.
- Check API keys and model access. Many issues come from missing API keys, expired credits, or a model not being enabled on the provider side.
- Confirm file access. Cogitae runs inside the macOS App Sandbox, so it can only access folders you have explicitly granted.
- Review the docs for the feature you are using. There are dedicated guides for common workflows and configuration.
In-App Help
Cogitae itself can often help explain how to do something inside the app, including setup steps and feature usage. This works best after you have configured an AI provider.

Common Questions
Which AI provider should I use?
A good, mid-range LLM will work well for most tasks. We advise to have at least three providers setup. It seems different models have different strengths. We've found Google's Gemini to be excellent for use in the Aristotle tool. Anthropic's Claude Sonnet works well as a general purpose model. OpenAI's leading models are also great for reasoning tasks. If you want to go cheaper, you could use something like OpenRouter with Qwen 3.5 with excellent results. If you have the hardware, run a llama.cpp server or download an MLX model in Preferences > AI for generating summaries. xAI's Grok 3 Mini is also good for summaries.
How do I install plugins?
Open Cogitae's preferences, go to the Plugins section, and browse available plugins. The exec and applescript plugins are particularly powerful for automating tasks on your Mac.
Alternatively, setup an AI Provider and ask Cogitae, "what plugins are available?"
If it lists any you find compelling, tell it, "Install the xxxx plugin"
Done.
The app won't connect to my AI provider
- Verify your API key is correct and has available credit
- Check that you've selected the right provider in AI Providers settings
- Ensure your internet connection is working
- Try regenerating your API key from the provider's console
